Recover files from a physically damaged MacBook

A broken screen, crushed case or damaged connector can prevent normal access without telling you what happened to the files. The next step depends on whether the MacBook remains stable and safe to use. Separate an access problem from a storage problem before authorising replacement parts.

Choose the least disruptive route to the existing files.

Start with these three steps

1

Document the damage

Record the impact, damaged area and any signs of power. Keep the model details and previous repair notes with the device.

2

Check for a reason to stop

Leave the MacBook off after liquid ingress, serious case deformation, abnormal heat or suspected battery damage. Do not force a damaged connector.

3

State the data priority

Tell the repairer which files have no backup and ask for a preservation plan before any erase or replacement.

If the problem appears limited to the display

A compatible external display may provide access when the built-in screen is broken and the rest of the MacBook works normally. Use an undamaged port, the appropriate cable or adapter, and your usual login. This is an access option, not a diagnosis that the storage survived the impact.

If the desktop appears and the laptop remains stable, copy the priority folders to healthy separate storage first. Open a few copied documents on the receiving computer. Avoid starting a large system update or reorganising folders while using this temporary access opportunity.

If the desktop is inaccessible but recovery starts

An Apple silicon MacBook that can enter macOS Recovery may offer Share Disk for transferring an accessible volume to another Mac. Intel MacBooks have a different option, target disk mode. Each requires functioning hardware, a suitable connection and access to any encrypted volume.

Choose the instructions for the actual model. A USB-C connector alone does not establish cable compatibility. If the Mac cannot reach the required mode, or the volume will not unlock, stop treating the cable as a recovery solution. Neither transfer method bypasses FileVault.

Resolve the data question before replacement

Apple warns that service may require erasing or replacing the startup disk. Ask how the specific repair affects the data-bearing components, particularly when the quote proposes a logic-board replacement. Get the answer before work begins, while the original parts remain available.

T2 storage encryption uses keys tied to the original hardware. Replacing an assembly can make the computer usable without recovering its former contents. For a device holding the only copy, request that recovery options be considered before surrendering or discarding the original board.

Make recovery results reviewable

Prepare a small priority list with recognisable folder names and example files. If the laptop held a research project, include raw data and analysis files; if it held creative work, include linked media. The ability to list a folder is less useful than opening the documents you need.

Data Recovery Lab NZ advertises assessment of MacBook logic-board and storage faults. As with any external provider, ask what will be returned, how access credentials will be handled and whether you can verify sample files. Keep a separate backup of recovered material before arranging any further computer repair.

A realistic view of recovery

  • Impact severity and visible screen damage do not establish whether the internal files are readable.
  • A functioning replacement board or screen is not evidence that the original data has been recovered.

Your questions, answered

Can I use an external keyboard or mouse?
Possibly, if the laptop is safe, its ports work and only the input device is damaged. Use normal authentication and prioritise copying important files.
Does target disk mode work on Apple silicon?
Apple silicon uses Share Disk in macOS Recovery. Target disk mode is the Intel route; follow the model-specific instructions and retain the required credentials.
What should I keep from an earlier repair?
Keep original boards, storage modules and the repair report. Identify which parts came from this MacBook and tell the next assessor what was changed.

Need help with the original MacBook?

Describe the model, what happened and which data matters. Data Recovery Lab NZ is an external specialist; ask it to confirm the assessment route for your exact device.
