Recover deleted iPhone messages and conversations

Start by identifying the conversation and when it disappeared. Apple's Messages app has a recovery folder on supported iOS versions, but a device backup is not automatically a historical archive of messages synchronised through iCloud.

Check Recently Deleted before considering a device restore.

Start with these three steps

1

Confirm which app held the conversation

This guide covers Apple's Messages app. Note the contact, approximate dates and whether an entire conversation or only a few messages are missing.

2

Open Recently Deleted in Messages

Look under the conversation filters or edit controls, depending on your iOS version. Select an eligible conversation and use Recover.

3

Record your backup position

Check available backup dates and whether Messages in iCloud was enabled. Do this before choosing any erase, reset or restore option.

Use Apple's message recovery feature

Apple supports recovering deleted messages and conversations in iOS 16 or later. Its current guidance describes a 30–40 day recovery window. Check promptly rather than assuming every conversation will remain available for the maximum period.

Recover the relevant conversation, then inspect the date range you need. A contact may appear under more than one number or address, so make sure you have found the right thread before concluding that recovery was incomplete.

Separate synchronisation from backup

If Messages in iCloud is enabled, messages are synchronised to iCloud and are not included in the daily iCloud device backup. If it is off, messages can be included in that backup.

For your own decision, write down two questions: did the backup predate the deletion, and did it include the messages? An affirmative answer to the first does not establish the second. If the old settings are uncertain, treat the contents of the backup as unconfirmed.

Think through a full restore

Apple's iCloud backup restore requires erasing a phone that is already set up. It is a device restoration process, not a promise to add selected old messages to your current conversations.

Before proceeding, preserve current information, identify the particular backup and establish why it is relevant. For an encrypted computer backup, its original backup password is required. Changing the backup password does not make an older encrypted copy accessible.

  • Identify which current conversations you also need to keep.
  • Record the backup date and where that backup is stored.
  • Stop if the proposed procedure is unclear about erasing current data.

Look for information already retained elsewhere

If the built-in recovery route has no eligible conversation, consider whether the information you need was separately saved. A screenshot, exported document or a copy voluntarily supplied by the other participant may answer the practical need without restoring the phone.

Be specific about what is missing: a date, an attachment, an address or the whole exchange. Keep any retained copy with its context. Do not assume that a promised device scan can reconstruct a permanently deleted conversation.

A realistic view of recovery

  • The 30–40 day guidance applies to supported recovery in Apple's Messages app, not every messaging service.
  • A suitable backup must actually exist and contain the messages; its availability cannot be assumed.
  • This guide does not promise access to permanently deleted conversations or bypass of a device passcode.

Your questions, answered

Does the same recovery window apply to WhatsApp?
This guide covers Apple Messages. Other messaging apps use their own recovery features and backup arrangements; check that app's official instructions.
Will updating iOS recover older deletions?
Apple says messages deleted before upgrading to a supporting version cannot be recovered through this feature. An update does not recreate those messages.
Can an old backup be useful?
Possibly, if it contains the conversation and remains accessible. Check the backup's contents and date, then weigh the effect of a full restore on current information.
