Start with these three steps
Identify the account
Check whether the missing information belonged to iCloud, a work account or another email service. Note any recent account or device change.
Check the relevant recovery route
For iCloud notes, look in Recently Deleted. For iCloud contacts, review the available archives through Data Recovery on iCloud.com.
Protect recent changes
Keep a separate record of newly added contacts or other important current information before choosing an earlier archive.
Missing notes may be under another account
Apple recommends checking Notes account settings, searching across accounts and reviewing folders. If your notes were stored through Gmail or Yahoo, check that account's Bin in Mail as well.
Choose one missing note you can describe clearly and search for a distinctive phrase. If you changed phones recently, compare the accounts you used on each. Avoid creating replacement notes with the same titles until you have established which originals remain.

Recover an eligible deleted note
iCloud notes stay in Recently Deleted for up to 30 days. Notes permanently removed from that folder cannot be recovered through it. If a note is eligible, recover it and check that the text and attachments you need are present.
Shared notes need a separate check. If you deleted a shared note you do not own, it does not appear in your Recently Deleted folder. The original sharing link may still open it unless the owner has stopped sharing.

Understand what a contact archive changes
iCloud can restore an available earlier version of contacts. The selected version replaces current iCloud contacts across devices, and iCloud first archives the current version. This differs from selecting one deleted contact to add back.
Review the archive dates against the last time the contacts were present. A recently deleted contact's archive may take up to 24 hours to appear. During restoration, wait before editing contacts because changes made then are not saved.
- Identify the earliest known date of the missing contacts.
- Record important contacts added after the archive you are considering.
- After restoration, check both missing and recently added entries.

Choose the recovery method for that account
An iCloud archive is useful only for information stored through iCloud. For a work or other provider account, start with that provider or your administrator and describe exactly what is missing.
Do not begin with a whole-phone restore simply because contacts and notes are important. Establish the account, available recovery copies and effect on current information first. Keep a short record of the dates, folders and accounts you checked so an assessment can focus on the remaining gap.

A realistic view of recovery
- A note permanently deleted from iCloud's recovery folder has no supported restoration through that feature.
- Available iCloud contact archives do not establish that a third-party account's contacts were backed up there.
- Restoring an earlier contact collection can change information that currently appears on other devices.
