Start with these three steps
Review Recently Deleted
Open Photos, locate Recently Deleted and recover any wanted items still listed. Check the remaining time instead of waiting until the end of the recovery window.
Check library views
Look in Hidden and the relevant Personal or Shared Library view. Confirm which Apple Account held the images before changing sync or account settings.
Check saved originals elsewhere
Look for camera-card originals, computer imports, Files exports and copies previously sent to others. Record which date ranges and video clips remain missing.
Use the available recovery album
Apple gives deleted photos and videos a 30-day period in Recently Deleted. Select the items and confirm Recover. If you use iCloud Photos, the corresponding library on iCloud.com is another place to check.
After recovery, open the full image and play the video. For a large event or import, compare a small checklist of dates and subjects. A few familiar thumbnails do not confirm that every original or complete clip has returned.

Separate a hidden image from a missing file
Apple recommends checking Hidden, Recently Deleted, Shared Library and iCloud Photos when pictures appear missing. An album is an organisational view, so adding an image to an album does not create a separate backup.
Remember the iPad's creative workflow. A drawing may remain inside an app even though its exported image disappeared from Photos. Conversely, a camera original may remain in Files while the edited result is missing. Search both the content and its expected format.

Check Recovered when it is available
On iPadOS 18 or later, Photos can show a Recovered album for eligible images or videos found on the device outside the current library. The album appears only when such items are found. Choose Restore to Library for anything you need.
Permanent deletion from Recovered takes effect immediately and does not send the item to Recently Deleted. Treat this as a specific library-repair opportunity, not evidence that any permanently erased image can be retrieved. Do not update an unstable or damaged iPad solely to look for it.

Check backup coverage before a restore
When iCloud Photos is enabled, its synchronised library is not also included in the daily iCloud device backup. If it was disabled, a backup may contain camera photos. The settings at the backup date matter.
Compare likely copies before replacing the iPad's current contents. For images trapped on an inaccessible device, explain the missing dates and any local editing work before service. Apple warns that an iPad can return from service erased, so make the data objective explicit.

A realistic view of recovery
- Recently Deleted cannot return a permanently removed item; search separately retained copies.
- A preview, shared image or screenshot may differ from the original in resolution, metadata or editability.
