Recover data when an iPad will not turn on

A black screen does not reveal whether an iPad has a power, display or startup problem. Begin with the history: a flat battery after storage calls for different handling from a tablet that stopped after a spill. The goal is to regain access without erasing the only copy of important work.

Use appropriate basic checks, then stop before an erasing step.

Start with these three steps

1

Check the circumstances

Note liquid exposure, impact, enclosure damage and unusual heat. If damage is suspected, stop use and arrange assessment rather than connecting power for a trial.

2

Identify the button layout

Establish whether your iPad has a Home button. Apple's force-restart instructions differ between the two layouts; use the branch that matches the tablet.

3

Check existing copies separately

Use another device to inspect your cloud accounts and backup dates. List any local documents, photos or app projects that those copies do not cover.

Try basic checks only on an apparently undamaged iPad

For an iPad with no suspected liquid or physical damage, follow Apple's hardware and charging checks. Apple says a device may need up to an hour of charging. Use suitable, undamaged charging equipment and stop if the device behaves abnormally.

Record what you see: a battery symbol, a brief Apple logo, an entirely dark screen or a successful startup. This history is more useful than repeating the same check. Charging is not an appropriate experiment for a wet, visibly damaged or overheating device.

Use the correct force-restart sequence

Without a Home button: quickly press and release the volume button nearest the top button, then the volume button furthest away; hold the top button until the Apple logo appears. With a Home button: hold Home and the top button until the logo appears.

A force restart is a restart instruction, not a command to erase the iPad. If it works, prioritise copying the work you identified. If it fails, that does not prove the storage is empty or establish which component has failed.

Use regained access to preserve the important content

Make a backup while the iPad is stable and accessible. Also consider a separate export of time-sensitive work such as a completed assignment or recording. Decide what you need first rather than spending the available session reorganising the tablet.

Check that the backup reports completion. Open exported documents and play recordings from their destination. For a creative project, keep the editable version when available as well as a viewable result; one does not necessarily substitute for the other.

Stop when the next proposal changes the data

If the iPad remains inaccessible, describe the checks already performed and ask for a data-focused assessment. Data Recovery Lab NZ includes iPad no-power faults in its published service scope; the actual recovery route depends on the device.

Read any computer prompt carefully. An offer to restore or erase is not the same as making a backup. Apple's forgotten-passcode computer reset deletes the device's contents. Before accepting a destructive step, establish what can be restored from copies you already have.

A realistic view of recovery

  • A black screen alone does not diagnose a failed battery, display, board or storage component.
  • Hardware service cannot guarantee access to every local file.
  • A previously connected computer may still need on-device permission before copying content.

Your questions, answered

Will a force restart erase my drawings?
The force-restart sequence restarts the device; it is different from Restore or Erase. If the iPad starts, make and verify copies before further troubleshooting.
Can I back up a tablet that stays off?
A new ordinary device backup requires sufficient operation and access. Search for backups made earlier rather than assuming a cable can copy an unresponsive iPad.
Should I keep trying different chargers all day?
Follow a limited set of appropriate checks, record the result and seek assessment if they fail. Stop immediately if damage or abnormal heat becomes apparent.

Need help with the original iPad?

Describe the model, what happened and which data matters. Data Recovery Lab NZ is an external specialist; ask it to confirm the assessment route for your exact device.
