Start with these three steps
Identify the missing content
Write down a few contact names or note titles, their approximate dates and the last account or folder in which you saw them.
Review accounts and folders
Check Notes folders and search across accounts. For Contacts, establish which account supplied the missing entries and whether it is currently shown on the iPad.
Preserve useful recent changes
Keep a separate record of newly added contacts and any notes you can still open before applying an older account archive or device backup.
Check visibility before treating content as deleted
Contacts can combine several accounts. Apple explains that removing an account from the iPad removes its contacts from the tablet's view while leaving them in the internet account. Check the appropriate account directly before trying a restore.
For Notes, search All Accounts and inspect the folder list. If a whole group of notes disappeared after an account change, review that account's Notes setting. For a school or workplace account, ask its administrator about the account's availability and retention rather than importing unrelated personal data into it.

Recover notes and check their contents
For iCloud notes, look in Recently Deleted in Notes or on iCloud.com. Eligible notes remain recoverable for up to 30 days unless permanently removed. Recover the note, then move it to a suitable folder if necessary.
Check more than the title. Open handwritten pages, scans and attachments and confirm that the parts you need remain available. A note kept by another email service may use that service's bin instead; Apple describes a different recovery route for such accounts.

Understand the scope of Restore Contacts
On iCloud.com, Data Recovery offers Restore Contacts from available earlier versions. Restoring an archive replaces the current iCloud contacts across the devices using them; it is not a single-contact undelete. iCloud saves the current version before replacement.
Choose the date deliberately and account for entries added afterwards. If only one person is missing, first check whether you already have their details in a trusted message or address record. That may resolve the immediate need without rolling back the entire contact collection.

Distinguish Notes from another notebook app
A handwritten notebook in a different app has that app's storage and recovery behaviour. Identify whether the app holds a native notebook, a PDF export or both. An exported PDF can preserve readable pages without preserving the original editing structure.
Check the app's own account and exported copies. For an iPad that can no longer be accessed, include the notebook name and app in the assessment request. A generic request for notes can miss the distinction between Apple Notes and a separate project format.

A realistic view of recovery
- An iCloud contact archive does not recover contacts stored solely in another provider's account.
- Permanently removed iCloud notes are unavailable through Recently Deleted.
- A readable export may not restore all editing features of the original notebook.
