Start with these three steps
Read the prompt carefully
Record whether the iMac asks for a Mac login password, recovery key or Apple Account details. These are different credentials; do not assume one can replace another.
Locate recovery information
Check your own password records and any saved FileVault key. For a work or school iMac, ask the organisation’s administrator whether it retained the recovery information.
Keep secrets out of enquiries
Describe whether a credential is available without including it. If an accepted recovery case needs it later, agree on a private transfer method.
A password problem deserves a specific diagnosis
On a stable iMac, check the selected account, keyboard layout and Caps Lock before treating a rejected login as lost encryption access. Apple’s password-recovery options vary with the Mac’s setup and may request an Apple Account or recovery key.
Follow the route offered for that Mac rather than trying unrelated reset commands. A supported account-recovery workflow can restore access in some circumstances, but changing a password is not a general decryption technique and does not recreate erased data.

Find a valid key before assuming there is none
FileVault setup can provide an account-based recovery route or a separate recovery key. For a managed iMac, an organisation may have escrowed a personal recovery key in its management service. Ask about that before accepting that an old employee account has made the files inaccessible.
If the iMac uses macOS Tahoe 26 or later, its FileVault key may be available in Passwords on another device signed into the same Apple Account with iCloud Passwords & Keychain enabled. Search for “recovery key” and check for the record matching this iMac. Do not assume a key was saved or synchronised.
Keep the device identifier and approximate setup date with your request to IT. A key saved for a different Mac or an earlier configuration should not be assumed to unlock the present volume. Record the result without circulating screenshots that reveal the key.

Understand the original hardware requirement
Apple silicon and T2 Macs encrypt their internal storage automatically; FileVault adds protection requiring user credentials. Other Intel iMacs do not all share that architecture. In the iMac range, Apple identifies T2 in iMac Pro and the 2020 27-inch Retina 5K model.
If the iMac also has a hardware fault, ask the assessor to explain what original components must be preserved. Keep an earlier board or storage module after repair. Password availability is one piece of the case, not permission to discard hardware that may still be needed.

Use successful access to protect the files
Once an eligible account or key unlocks a stable volume, copy the priority data to separate storage and verify it. Decide which user folders and libraries matter beforehand so a brief period of access is used effectively.
If no supported unlock route works, pause before an erase option. Apple warns that losing both usable password recovery and the required FileVault recovery information can make the files inaccessible. An erase may let you set up the iMac again; it does not retrieve those files.

A realistic view of recovery
- Neither an account reset nor a hardware repair guarantees decryption of an existing volume.
- Required credentials, original hardware state and readable storage must all be considered; losing one can prevent recovery.
